This was a commission by an Irish NGO called Niall Mellon Trust, which is a house building charity. http://www.nmtownshiptrust.com  So the brief was to cover a day in the life of a pupil. I must add this was the first time I actually shot a photo story. The pupil in this case was Rosemary Atieno. She goes to Reuben Centre Primary school. the charity will be helping to build more classrooms in the school which is in Mukuru wa Reuben slum or one of variations of Mukuru slum. i didn’t know they were that many, Mukuru wa njenga, Mukuru wa Reuben.

Getting there is always quite the workout especially because I am on a motorbike and the road gets Muddy, all I keep thinking when going to the school is. Allan don’t fall, don’t fall, look like you know what you are doing.

Anyway I got there met the director of the center, Brother Frank who was quite helpful. I met up with Rosemary and Victoria who works at the center an we headed to Rosemary’s home. Rosemary mum was very welcoming, we had tea as I fumbled through how to make the story.

I was very humbled and amazed at how accommodating and helpful the family was to us who were total strangers invading their privacy.  I hope my photos tell the story and that the Niall Mellon charity building extra classrooms in the school will help’s Rosemary family and many other families like Rosemary.

Anyway here is the photo story for that day. Let me know what you think
